Celebrating Facilitation Week 2026 (2 – 8 Feb)

I have loved Image cards and have used these at the start of many sessions.

If used appropriately, a facilitator can subtly open up the conversational space. Image cards work as a right-brain activity that opens up perspectives, thoughts, feelings. The construct of divergence can make the emergence in small groups or in the larger group (the emergence may not be as deeper).

I also used another set of cards i.e. regular playing cards for various anchors - creating groups from small groups of 4 each (using court or numbers on the deck) to using Suit types to make large groups. I have facilitated closures inviting members to speak in a particular order and for certain Leadership and D&I workshops, I have used the playing cards for Status games i.e. lower the value of the card, lower is the players value in a discussion, feedback, role-play or pair conversations.

One of my struggles as a designer of workshops tools was to marry these both.

And voila, we have managed this…

How it works?

BASIC SETUP

These are 50 cards + 4 instruction cards

Lay the cards on a table or on the floor. The face that is exposed (top-up) should be the one that the facilitator intends to process. Ask people to pick up a card based on a given prompt (see instructions on separate cards).

Face with Images:

Image cards are powerful tools in facilitation because they make learning more engaging, reflective, and inclusive.

The other face (side)

·       Words that trigger thoughts,

·       Emotions that one experiences usually in organisational setting

·       Four colours with 10 cards each from nos. 0 to 10 numbers

·       Presence Scales: consisting of Posture, Oratory, Eye Contact & Reactions
