Every session / training / facilitation one attends, towards the end a feedback sheet is thrust in the hands and in the rush of catching the fast-local back home, one is expected to fill the sheet. So most just take one particular position and then very quickly they follow the same ticks till the very end on the same question.
What happens to the feedback of this reaction-sheet is another post altogether sometime later.

Why not? The first experience of using a Rating Scale as a facilitative method was experienced by me when I attended Rhonda Tranks session at the the 1st global IAF conference in India (around 2010 in Bengaluru). And since then, I have been a loyal fan of this method.ย

The play of this method (not necessarily only for feedback sheets, can be used at different points of time during your facilitated workshops as per your design).ย

Pฬฒrฬฒeฬฒpฬฒ:

A sheet with measurable statements with adjoining scale (numerical or likert-type scale). I personally prefer to use numerical even-numbered scale to avoid mid-point marking by many who like to play safe.ย

๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ:

  • Give the prepared sheet to each group-member to mark on.ย

ย

  • While they are filling, the facilitator lays on the floor in sequence the numbers (as per the scale used) in a crescent manner (if space permits) spreading the numbers with ample space in between for movement.ย

ย

  • Ask the group to carry their sheets along with and move towards the laid numbers.

ย

  • Read out (ask someone to read) the 1st statement and invite them to position themselves physically around or behind the laid-out numbers.ย

ย

  • Verbally set-up the WOWโ€™s (Ways of Working)ย
o this is a discussion and not a debate,
o allow unheard voices to speak
o see that all positions are represented in the discussion
o be loud so everyone in the room can hear
o they address the gorup and not the facilitator as he/she will move out of the discussion and will only step-in if needed
o invite them to self-manage the discussion on their own
    o announce time limit

ย

  • Invite them to start and the facilitator moves out.ย

ย

The facilitator can be in the periphery without being visibly moderating however if there are discussion challenges such as arguments, debates, anger, blaming etc. , please step in and navigate.ย

Once time is up (or you sense closure), check if any person wants to change their position in the scale. Ask them what made them change positions? (alternatively, this can be done at the end, after all statements are discussed).

Announce the next statement and move forward. At times, you may want to facilitate a particular statement differently.ย

Repeat for all statements.ย

The more you deliver this method, the more play you will experience... flex and make the group think, feel, share, realise.
